چکیده

A character is a result of the cooperative action of all genes, although some genes alone, and in case of “factor interaction,” more than one gene, are chiefly concerned in the development of a particular character. Interacting genes, as well as modifiers, may be specific in their effect, since they can act only in the presence of a particular genetical environment (BRIDGES 1919), and non-specific, when their action is not confined to a particular gene. The present paper deals with the inheritance of thorax protrusions, curling of bristles and other characteristics which appear in various phenotypical expressions as a result of the interaction of certain genes with nonspecific modifiers. The following five genes are involved in the interaction here studied: Ruffled (ru), a fifth chromosome recessive gene. In ruffled flies the tips of the dorso-central bristles and hairs near them are curled forward, and the thorax may be slightly telescoped (figure la). Rounded (R), a second chromosome dominant gene. Rounded flies have truncate wings, short and bushy arista (figure Id). Clipped (CZ), a fourth chromosome dominant gene, lethal when homozygous. In clipped flies the posterior end of the wings are cut and the majority have two dorso-central bristles slightly curled (figure le). Shaggy (sh), a fifth chromosome recessive gene. In shaggy flies the abdominal hairs are directed irregularly. Beaded (Bd), a fifth chromosome dominant, lethal when homozygous. In beaded flies the wing margins are scalloped and one or two of the dorsocentral bristles may become slightly curled, depending upon condition of the food and age of the flies. The following are new characters which have resulted from the interaction between some of the above described genes: Vortex1, two well-developed horn-like protrusions on the thorax, located lateral to and midway between the anterior and posterior dorsocentral bristles. The microchaetae or small hairs around these protrusions are arranged in a whorl. Vortex-2, protrusions are only slightly developed, and in extreme cases leaving only two brown pigmented spots surrounded by whorled hairs.

Extensive Differences in Antifungal Immune Response in Two Drosophila Species Revealed by Comparative Transcriptome Analysis

The innate immune system of Drosophila is activated by ingestion of microorganisms. D. melanogaster breeds on fruits fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, whereas D. virilis breeds on slime flux and decaying bark of tree housing a variety of bacteria, yeasts, and molds. In this study, it is shown that D. virilis has a higher resistance to oral infection of a species of filamentous fungi belong...

Contribution of X Chromosomal and Autosomal Genes to Species Differences in Male Courtship Songs of the Drosophila Virilis Group Species

In sympatric Drosophila species, songs produced by male wing vibration during courtship are an effective mechanism preventing interspecific matings and maintaining sexual isolation between different species. These songs can vary greatly even between closely related species. The aim of this study was to localise X chromosomal and autosomal genes affecting species differences in male courtship so...

The genetics of postmating, prezygotic reproductive isolation between Drosophila virilis and D. americana.

Many studies have demonstrated the rapid diversification of reproductive genes that function after mating but before fertilization. This process might lead to the evolution of postmating, prezygotic barriers between species. Here, I investigate the phenotypic and genetic basis of postmating, prezygotic isolation between two closely related species of Drosophila, Drosophila virilis and D. americ...

An Analysis of the Chromosomes of the Two Sub-Species Drosophila Virilis Virilis and Drosophila Virilis Americana.

NCREASING attention is being focused on the use of Drosophila as a I convenient organism for investigating such fundamental problems as the formation of new species and interspecific sterility. Studies of the hybrid from the cross D. melarzogasterXD. simulans by PATAU (I935), and by HORTON (1939), and D. pseudoobscuraXD. miranda by DOBZHANSKY and TAN (1936), as well as studies of the hybrids fr...

Key aspects of the primary sex determination mechanism are conserved across the genus Drosophila.

In D. melanogaster, a set of 'X:A numerator genes', which includes sisterlessA (sisA), determines sex by controlling the transcription of Sex-lethal (Sxl). We characterized sisA from D. pseudoobscura and D. virilis and studied the timing of sisA and Sxl expression with single cell-cycle resolution in D. virilis, both to guide structure-function studies of sisA and to help understand sex determi...

Comparative analysis of Pdf-mediated circadian behaviors between Drosophila melanogaster and D. virilis.

A group of small ventrolateral neurons (s-LN(v)'s) are the principal pacemaker for circadian locomotor rhythmicity of Drosophila melanogaster, and the pigment-dispersing factor (Pdf) neuropeptide plays an essential role as a clock messenger within these neurons. In our comparative studies on Pdf-associated circadian rhythms, we found that daily locomotor activity patterns of D. virilis were sig...
